The Festival Guest Survival Guide β€” According to Your Dog πŸΆπŸŽ‰

Festivals mean a house full of people, endless greetings, new smells, snacks appearing everywhere and absolutely no shortage of attention.

However, for your dog, every guest comes with a completely different personality!

Some guests bring treats, while others want cuddles. Meanwhile, a few may be nervous around dogs, and some apparently believe your pet has been waiting all day specifically to meet them.

So, if your dog could describe festival guests, what would they say? Let’s find out!

1. β€œThe Treat Person Has Arrived.” πŸͺ

Every family has that one guest who immediately asks:

β€œCan I give your dog something?”

Your dog probably already knows who they are. After all, the smell of snacks, festive food and treats can make a busy celebration even more exciting for pets.

Your dog might think:

β€œFinally. Someone who understands my priorities.”

What to do

If guests want to feed your dog, decide beforehand which treats are suitable and how much they can have. That way, your pet won’t end up receiving a treat from every person who walks through the door.

Also, let your guests know that festive food isn’t automatically safe for dogs.

2. β€œWhy Are You Trying to Hug Me?” πŸ€—πŸ•

Some guests absolutely love dogs. The moment they see your pet, they want to cuddle, pet them, pick them up or take a photo.

However, not every dog enjoys that kind of attention.

Your dog might think:

β€œWe met approximately four seconds ago.”

Instead of expecting your pet to interact with everyone, let them approach guests at their own pace. If your dog moves away, hides, freezes or seems uncomfortable, give them some space.

Remember, choosing not to interact is perfectly okay!

3. β€œThe Guest Who Is Scared of Dogs.” 😳

Then there’s the opposite situation.

Your dog may be happily walking around the house while a guest stands on the sofa asking:

β€œIs he going to come near me?”

Meanwhile, your dog may have absolutely no idea why this person is nervous!

Your dog might think:

β€œI was just walking past.”

In this situation, don’t force an interaction. Instead, keep a comfortable distance between your pet and the guest. This way, both can enjoy the gathering without feeling pressured.

4. β€œThe Child Who Wants to Play Forever.” πŸ§’πŸΎ

Festivals often mean children visiting, and many of them may be excited to see a pet.

As a result, they might want to play continuously, follow the dog around, call them repeatedly, touch them while they’re resting or involve them in every activity.

Your dog might think:

β€œIs playtime a full-time job now?”

Although children may simply be trying to have fun, dogs also need time to rest. Therefore, always supervise interactions between children and dogs.

Additionally, give your pet a quiet place where they can move away whenever they need a break.

5. β€œThe Person Who Keeps Calling Me.” πŸ˜‚

You know the guest!

β€œCome here!”

β€œCome here, puppy!”

β€œWhy isn’t he coming?”

β€œPuppy, come!”

Meanwhile, your dog is sitting three feet away, wondering why their name has suddenly become the most important word in the house.

Your dog might think:

β€œI heard you the first time.”

Sometimes, your pet simply wants to observe the room from a comfortable distance. So, rather than repeatedly calling them or forcing an interaction, let them decide when they’re ready to approach.

6. β€œI’m Not Scared of Dogs!” 😀🐢

And then comes the person who confidently announces:

β€œDon’t worry, I’m not scared of dogs!”

Your dog:

β€œOkay?”

Of course, feeling comfortable around dogs doesn’t mean every dog wants to meet you immediately.

Some love meeting new people, while others need time to warm up. Similarly, certain dogs prefer their familiar humans, and some would rather nap through the entire festival!

Therefore, the goal isn’t to make your dog greet everyone. Instead, let them experience the celebration comfortably and choose when they want to interact.

Your Dog’s Festival Guest Survival Guide 🐾

If your dog could make the rules, they might look something like this:

Rule #1: Please don’t all call me at once.

Rule #2: Treats are appreciated. However, too many are not.

Rule #3: Please ask before touching me.

Rule #4: If I walk away, let me walk away.

Rule #5: Children and dogs need supervision.

Rule #6: I need a quiet place when the house gets too busy.

Rule #7: I don’t have to greet every guest.

Rule #8: Please remember that festive food isn’t automatically dog-friendly.

And most importantly:

Rule #9: This is my house too. 🐢

After all, your dog lives there every day, so they deserve to feel comfortable during the celebrations too!

When the Guest List Gets Too Much

A full house can be exciting. However, constant activity may also become overwhelming for some pets.

For example, your dog may try to hide, move away from people, become unusually restless, avoid interaction or seem uncomfortable with the noise.

If you notice these behaviours, give your pet access to a quieter, familiar area away from the crowd. This allows them to rest without having to interact with every guest.

Most importantly, don’t force your dog to return to the gathering before they’re comfortable. A little breathing room can make a big difference.

The Wagsphere POV 🧠

Festivals are exciting because they bring people together.

But for pets, a celebration can mean unfamiliar people, extra noise, different smells, changed routines and constant interaction.

The best festival guest experience isn’t necessarily the one where your dog meets everyone.

It’s the one where your dog gets to choose when to interact, when to play and when to take a break.

Because sometimes the happiest festival guest…

…is the one sleeping peacefully under the table. πŸΆπŸ’€
